Thanks for the input so far. I have not yet put the power to the
breaker, as I wanted to wait for advice, or the chance to borrow a
scope, or some other indicator. The spindle does have a variable speed
head. I don't recall what the name of the circuit that drives it is,
however. I believe that all the servo motors run on DC, and there is a
rotogenerator that makes it. This is a separate motor & generator
combination that feeds the logic and control circuits with 5 and 12 V
+/- DC. (I'm not sure that it feeds the servo's now that I think about
it)
There is a single phase section of the circuitry as well, and it has
occurred to me that I might be better off with a real leg of my phase
convertor feeding this section, vs the manufactured phase, but I don't
yet know which one of the phases feeds it. I don't think that I want to
start bypassing things and hooking up parts of the circuit directly,
yet. I just want to see if I get lights on the machine, and have the
ability to jog the table in all axis. I don't even know if I'll turn on
the spindle motor, until I measured some current draws of the unit at
idle. I've measured my phase convertor, and I only have enough capitance
in the system to keep the currents close to equal if they are about 6
amps per line or less. Above that, the manufactured leg can't keep up
with the draw, which probably won't do good things to the old
electronics. Hence my questions about the 60 amp breakers. I'll keep you
updated, until Christmas break, when the machine gets to continue its
rest.
