My actual CNC machine runs on a 100 MHz Pentium classic. It is updating
the servo DACs at 1000 Hz. It could do 2000, but that is close to the limit of
the 100 MHz CPU.

I have done a lot of experimenting with my parallel port motion control stuff
using a 333 MHz Pentium II, but that is so fast that the servo cycle
is completed in 50 uS! So, it could run 10 KHz pretty well, if you had a need
to.

I don't use steppermod or freqmod, but with my step rate generators, the
computer thinks it is driving a servo machine.
