You can get surface plates so cheap, I would buy one for 19 or 29
bucks and try different methods on it. Your results could be helpful
to the group.

I know where you can get one cheap with inserts already in it, but it
is 6'by6' and over 10 tons.

Threaded inserts epoxied into holes sounds like the way to go.
Drilling the holes may be interesting.
