Except that step pulses are usually very narrow and not a square wave.
The frequency components of a narrow step pulse are much higher (in
freq) than the base frequency you are identifying.

On my system, the step pulses are only a few microseconds wide. You
will certainly be able to see a stream of pulses with a 20KHz scope, but
you won't be able to trigger on and resolve a single pulse. Having said
that - for trouble shooting, a 20KHz bandwidth may be ok, but on that
basis, I would recommend a trusty old logic probe instead.

In any event, try winscope if it has a trial/evaluation period you will
learn from the experience.
