I have had a number of problems with shielded cable use in a data environment
whenever both ends of the shield are connected. If there is ANY difference
in potential between the two ends you end up actually causing the
interference you are trying to shield the wires in cable from. As to motors,
the difference between the two ends of the shield as far as voltage is
concerned, would need to be rather large to cause any problems I would think.
However, I still think it better to connect only one end of the shield and,
to answer your basic question, you would connect it to a good ground.
