Shields generally work best if the shield is only grounded at one end.
This prevents (external) currents from flowing through the shield.
For a Gecko or similar motor driver, connecting the shield to the
power ground terminal at the driver end is probably the best starting
configuration. You then evaluate whether this meets your needs, or
you need to reduce radiation / interference more.
