ULN2003 (or ULQ2003) can connect directly to a // port.

Make sure the ground pin is wired to a good ground point,
and the common input must be connected to the powersupply
of the load you are driving.

If you use multiple power supplies, say 5V for leds and
30V for solenoids connect the common pin to the highest
voltage supply.

These chips work great if the common input is wired right,
otherwise they exhibit very interresting failure modes.

Probably the best and easiest to use driver for your application.
