I use a Xilinx XC9572 in my DAC and DIO boards, and the XCS30
in the universal stepper board. I use the XCS10 in the PPMC encoder
counter board. The XCS10 is about $18, the XCS30 is $30, and the
XC9572 is only $6!

I have the Xilinx software and a pretty expensive PCB package.
I'm also getting quite familiar with EMC internals.
