Hmmm... The only machine where I did lead-screws that were over 4' (12'), I
used 1½" dia. ball-screws and preloaded nuts. The nuts were so large and
cumbersome that the concept of rotating nut never crossed my feeble mind, but
now that you make me think about it, this WOULD have been a solution to some
problems! However, it would mean putting the X-steppers (MO-172!!!) on the
carriage, so... Ah, maybe would not be a "better idea".

HOWEVER, with small turcite nuts and ACME threads on machines with 4' or
shorter lead-screws, may-well be a good idea! Only, BOTH X-and Y- steppers
(or servos, whatever) would have to be on the carriage...
