Dave: The HUGE X-Y router I built for England has steel "mounts" (rails) for
the Thomson roundways, but a very-accurately-built WOODEN table (built by
precision woodworkers using joinery, screws, and glue---good as a
"machine"!). The "steel parts" are let-into grooves in the side-rails of the
wooden bench. Top is "Melamine" (a type of Formica-like stuff), and is
screwed-on, so is replaceable when it becomes spoiled by "work accidents",
etc.
I used preloaded 1.5" ball-screws from BSA (San Jose, CA), and I ran TWO
3-meter screws, one down each long side (for "X"), and connected with #35
sprocket-chain. Should have been #50!
Wanna see a picture of this, I finally got the film-photos I took of it in
'86 "digitized", so I can send those, if you have several minutes to
download. I don't attach it unless asked. Just holler! If you wanna see
more details, I have several digital photos of my home-brew stuff, recent
ones taken with a Nikon 950 digitalspensivmera.
