Man, I'd hope the Geckos would have onboard voltage regulators. A 7805
and some capacitors would go a long way toward not blowing out the
optoisolators.
Most electronic devices have an operating range for each of the inputs,
including power. Something that's got a voltage regulator on it will
typically allow a range from a couple of volts above nominal to many volts
above nominal. If the range on the Gecko is 5 +/1 0.1 volt, I definitely
wouldn't use a 6V source.
But again, it would suprise me if there was no regulation on board.
