You could use a rate multiplier, check with Marris as you may be
able to use the rate multiplier board from them if the opto socket is
the same? Otherwise you may be able to get an encoder wheel in a
lower resolution. It also seems with 600 oz servo's a 1:1 drive would
be ok .

Check out vector's group discount perhaps this fits in the pain area.
The product seems very well supported .

If you build a rate multiplier the key to success is a very clever
PLL scheme otherwise you get ratty pulse spacing.
