Insulated? No, insulation does not prevent interfering signals from getting
to the wires. Making a special cable with individual twisted pairs for each
signal like step and direction will healp greatly. If your drivers have
opto-isolated inputs, this is all you should need.

You do NOT need a resistor in the DC power lines to the Gecko drives.
In fact, that could damage them, and would certainly cause them to malfunction.
There is a small resistor that is used on most of them to set the motor current.
The Gecko does the current limiting.
