You sort of answer your own question here. Why would you not have
a cheapo celeron/pentium machine to sit next to the chips??? We all
know that CNC is not cheap, but you don't need a 1.6 GHz Machine to
throw chips.

Personally I would approach the problem one of two ways.

#1 Network with an X-Server running on the sacrificial server next to
the machine for remote control.

#2 Use a switch box to switch from local keyboard to a remote
keyboard.

Keep your nice machine on your desk, running G-Code does not require
a supercomputer.
