The completed CNC unit is worth a lot more. I realize that a lot of
people want a starter project but the chances of all of the
components being reusable for your next larger project are pretty low.
As for having thrust bearings at one end of a ball screw:
A lot of commercial designs have a pair of thrust bearings at the
motor end and allow the other end to "float" to allow for some
ballscrew flex. If you preload the driven end bearings so that there
is no lateral movement there should not be a problem as long as the
other end is captured and supported (not by just the saddle nut)
IMHO it would make sense to replace the existing screw and mountings
with the new ballscrew. I'm sure you will get some other responses.
