You line of thinking is a false economy. Virtually none of the parts from
one machine will work right on the next unless you are going to design from
scratch to use them. You state that your next machine will be a large
gantry. So what are you going to do with this one puny ball screw? Also
gantry's tend to need high travel speeds and a 5/8" ball screw is pretty
whippy for that.
Finally, you are looking to convert this first machine in a way that will be
far less than optimum. If you don't capture the far end of the lead screw it
will whip if you are going to have any rapid above a snails pace. You want
to mount everything in places that will not let the force be applied evenly.
You don't want to hear the advise of people that have done what you are
looking to do.
OK, here is the advise I think you want to hear. Fabulous idea. Go for it
and take lots of pictures. Keep us updated on your progress.
