Autocad is cad only and does not create g-code. Cam software creates g-code and often can create the 2d geometry or 3d model as well. If you are proficient with Autocad, you may find it easier to create your geometry there and then "dxf out" to your cam software. Dxf, by the way, is a format used to convert files between cad and cam programs that would not otherwise be compatable. As for the z axis of machining, that depth will be set one way or another in your cam software. Hope this helps a bit.

I am a little confused!
When using a cad program such as AutoCad2002 how does the process
flow to finished milled product.
What format does one use DWG DXF?
How do these files get converted to GCODE to be used by EMC?
I can understand the XY plot but where does Z info come from when
designing in 2D?
Sorry for my ignorance ;-)
