EMC is the software that resides on the CNC controller (in this case it is a
PC) it interprets the g-code and turns that into the neccisary signals to
drive the mill/router/EDM... whatever. the types of signals it puts out
depends on the machine, and is changable.
Ive downloaded ACECONVERTER, and it is free, but haven't had time to test
it. it takes a .dxf file and translates it into g-code....
also, for some cool 3-d work, i have seen stl-works, which takes an .stl
file and translates it into 3d g-code, for use with a ball-nose 3-axis
router or mill. its cost was around 200 last i checked. (mastercam is tens
of thousands!)---dave L.

Thanks for the info....
Is EMC CAM software?
Can EMC read in DXF files or do I need a DXF to GCODE converter?
If so are there any good freeware converters available?
TIA

well. If you are proficient with Autocad, you may find it easier to
create your geometry there and then "dxf out" to your cam software.
Dxf, by the way, is a format used to convert files between cad and
cam programs that would not otherwise be compatable. As for the z
axis of machining, that depth will be set one way or another in your
cam software. Hope this helps a bit.
