instead of a full CD how about a smaller "stripped down" version
like Slackware`s Zipslack insalation (http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/)
it comes with a generic kernel (easily replaced/patched for RTLinux),
base system, utilitys and gcc.By default Zipslack does not come with X
installed but it can be added from the regular Slackware distro packages.
the hard drive space required for the default install is <100Mb
add X with one of the smaller window managers,RTL and EMC to
this and it should still come in at well under 200Mb installed.
the Zipskack package IS a big download at about 35Mb + the X packages
but adding EMC + RTL would only stretch it out by a few more megs,
still small enough to download overnite while you sleep and a bit easier
than sending disks all over the world
I agree its not a perfect solution and it still requires some technical
know-how to get up and running, but I think most of the potential problems
could be solved with a good read.me file and a few shell scripts.
also for anyone looking for small servo motors I found these in the
new Jameco catalog
http://www.jameco.com/cfm/viewdesc.cfm?part_num=169210
Shinano Kenshi 24VDC Servo Motor with Encoder Res: 500 Pulses/Rotation
qt(1-9) Price 19.95 ea
note this motor has a metric mount with an 8mm dia shaft ,not nema23 but about the same size, found this info somewhere else
its not big enough for a bridgeport but should work well on smaller machines
like a taig or sherline
