There is a single floppy version of linux called mulinux that can do
this- I use it as my normal recovery process at work where I have over
30 linux systems. I do backus to a cd, then if I have to restore I boot
mulinix. I also use it to clone new installations so I dont have to do
every system from a fresh install.

This could clearly be done for EMC, BUT hardware variation is will be
the problem- I do it because I control all the machines.

The real answer is for someone to patch a kernel for real time, then
make a new rpm package out of it. That way everyone can simply install
the rpm and run. This is why rpm was written. It would take just a few
hours to do.
