It would work well as an "assist" because that is what it does on a car.
All power steering systems work the same way, no matter what vintage
or style. In fact, the rotary spool valve that is the most common style
nowadays would probably be the best for such a system. Just fit one between
feed wheel and feed screw. But, what is the advantage of doing this?
