David,
What more can be said than welcome to the "hobby" aspect of what you
have been doing all these years. It's a riot no matter how you control it.
Coming from a work world similar to yours, albeit on smaller
equipment, I too have seen my share of "happenings" on all sides of the
control world. Most of those quirks were quickly fixed with dedicated
circuits and maintaining adequate Main Service.

I just happen to really appreciate the development towards Windows PC
control and multitasking. IF it works as dependably as your HP printer,
nothing will stop it from happening. (Clearly, it looks like it IS going
to happen) I feel that in the end, If running a "boxed" Sherline on the
desktop happens to be the >Safe use< of mulitasking a controller, well,
I wont be too afraid of a "runaway". Of course your background is a with
lot larger stuff, so I understand your points fully.

I've had really great results with FlashCut. I can't help that !
Honestly, I do not recall a "runaway" or Unexpected move except on beta
versions that was not caused by myself. I did have a case once where I
was introducing very large static discharges because of Foam dust
collection...... Any control would not like that. Thats with about 6
retrofits, but keep in mind on Flatbed style machines like Routers,
Engravers and Plasma cutters. I guess my view, and the value I can put
on the Term "realtime" has diminshed.......

Best wishes with your new endeavors, and keep everyone up to date on
your projects!
