I recently developed a little circuit that monitors servo voltages,
currents, and speed. It just uses op amps to solve the second
order differential equations of motion to real time calculate
spindle force.
So I spent some time watching currents on the scope as the
machine runs.
I routinely see 60 amps peaks going around sharp corners and
starting and stopping from rapids.
The average total current with typical cutting is about 10-15 amps.
This is with a xyz gantry machine using three Copley 412 amps
which are similar in power to the Geckos. The amps are heat
sinked (sunk?) and forced air cooled.
Mariss had suggested to me that 240v operation would be
preferrable and I agree. It is much stiffer than the average
120v 15a circuit and there are no worries about floating
neutrals. Georgia power was nice enough to float my
neutral last year and I really apreciated seeing 240 on
my 120v outlets. Thank god the cnc was not on one.
