Have you guys checked out the general purpose digital I/O boards
such as National Instruments and Computerboards sell? I've used these
for modular Telecom test equipment in the past and they're pretty flexible.

You can get versions with 24/48/96/128 I/O ports. High current, optoisolated, etc.

These are a quick way to get a project going. I normally use the 48 port board, which is
a short ISA card. It has a connector for a ribbon cable, and I have a couple of
boards which break out the ribbon cable to screw type terminal strips.

Computerboards is more cost effective than National, and are usually compatible.
