I missed most of this thread, but I'll throw in my $.02. The Cincinnati
10VC has a brake on the Z-axis only. It prevents the spindle carrier from
sliding into the table when the servo drives and compressed air
counterbalance are disabled. The brake requires 24VDC power to it's
armature to disengage. You need to apply the power when your z-axis drive
is enabled. (and you have air pressure)

I used a TTL output pin on my servo amplifier to drive a solid state relay
in series with the original "master start" relay contacts.(4CR ?) If the
drive dies, over travels, or faults, the brake will go on and prevent the
spindle carrier from dropping into the work piece.
