Had a search as promised,
best url I found so far was
http://www.dontronics.com/dt006_programming.html
which includes links to a free basic compiler (code limited to 2K which is
quite big really ) and details of a parallel port based in-system-programmer
(3 resistors!) example code etc....
Atmel AVRs do give you a lot of power per £, slightly less robust than the
pic but things like PWM available and the onboard comparator are lovely for
motor control.

Initially they called it "pic-killer". Microchip took them to court,
now its called "single chip computer".
