At risk of going OT with this thread, but...

Nothing wrong with atmel at all (I use them all the time for stepper
control) but you can't program them quite so directly in basic, there may be
a compiler available, but I don't think there is a freeware one (I'll have a
search), and you need a programmer too, whereas the programmer for the stamp
is just a couple of wires off the parallel port.

A lot of pitfalls for a non-micro person
