I used surplus encoders an old 486 and bits and pieces for a total cost
<$200 (including the computer and monitor). If you buy the encoders from US
Digital

you can get units for ~$40US ea. The software is freeware (from my page or
elsewhere) and if you have a good "junkbox", the rest is free or nearly so.

Depending on the "line count" of the encoder, you can acheive a real high
resolution (accuracy depends on YOUR detail)
