Interesting link. Just joined the email list today.
Has anyone considered using an optical mouse as the encoder. I have read standard optical mice have a resolution of 800 dpi and that the good ones have 2400 dpi. Seems like a cheap source for an encoder. I read the following article awhile ago http://www6.tomshardware.com/consumer/20030110/mx_mice-01.html and thought it would be interesting to experiment building an encoder with one of these mice. Your message and link made me recall the idea and I am curious if anyone else has tried this.
