Hi Peter,
The problem with your picture below is that if your (A) was
energized, then the rotors' (S) would point to the (B)(1:30 o'clock),
half way between your 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock (N)/(A). It wouldn't
just point to the 12 o'clock (N) (or likewise just to the 3
o'clock). Remeber, B is doing nothing so shouldn't be in the
picture. It may just confuse things, so I took it out in the second
diagram below.

both were energized(which they normally would be), then your S would
point to halfway between. If you take a stepper appart, you can see
that the two phases have different section on the rotor that they act
on, one offset from the other. Anyway, with S pointing to 1:30 now,
swap polarities. You will then see that you can go clockwise, or
counterclockwise to get to the proper place. Third (funky)diagram
for 1:30 is below this one.
