Hi Peter,
Look at the picture below as a STARTING (perhaps stationary)
point, because with the A (only) energized, that is how the rotor
will be oriented (to 1:30) NOT to 12:00, and NOT to 3:00.
Now swap polarity of the stator so that at 12:00 and 3:00 you now
have S (A).
You also have the (S) on the rotor in between (at 1:30) that wants
to get away from both of thoses (S)s that are now at 12:00 and 3:00.
It is in the middle at 1:30 and wants to go to 7:30. Which route
should it take to get to 7:30? They are both the same distance and
given equal strengths of repulsion at 12:00 and 3:00 (and equal
strength of attraction at the new (N)s, there is no determined route
to take. If there was already motion in one direction or another it
would continue on that route.

Any better?
