As I am sitting here typing my Sherline CNC lathe is happily cutting a
part out in the garage. I just run out every 15 minutes or so and swap
the finished part for some raw stock.
In my mind jobs fall into 3 categories.
1 - One off. These I never run unattended.
2 - Repetitive production parts that are free machining. These are the
ones I run unattended after proving the program on the first few pieces.
3 - Repetitive production that are not free machining. I never run these
unattended. These would be jobs that have a chip build up or other issue
that required user interaction while it runs. An example would be a part
I cut last night. Had to make 6 copies, but it had a section where I
trepanned out a piece using a 1/16" bit in 6061 aluminum that was 3/16"
thick. To keep the bit from getting clogged and snapping I had to clean
the cut channel on each pass.
