Hi Peter:
I was referring to rules in general...not specifically to rules
pertaining to machines.
Whether to leave a machine running unattended is a matter of exercising
judgement, not blindly applying a rule.
Many have commented already on occasions when they feel confident leaving a
CNC running unattended, and when not.
Another contributor pointed out that all safety rules are intelligent
rules...while this is true for the vast majority of cases, some of the rules
dreamed up by OSHA and WCB (Canadian version) are truly bizzarre, and have
no discernible connection with any concern for safety.
Rather, they are idiocies dreamed up by bureaucrats who couldn't recognize a
legitimate safety problem if it bit them on the butt.
These are among the rules I prefer to break whenever necessary.
In any event; leaving a CNC machine to run unattended is not a significant
safety concern provided that the code and operation is proven, the process
is robust, and the equipment is in good condition.
It's done all the time in industry, and the equipment is designed for it.
Cheers
Marcus
