That depends on how you define safety. If you mean personal safety from
injury, spending the most time as far from the machine as possible is best,
assuming the machine is well-enough designed not to undergo a catastrophic
self-destruction (e.g. it can't set the building on fire).
If on the other hand you mean safety from damaged workpieces, tooling, or
machinery, watch it like a hawk.
Somewhere in between is probably appropriate. Listen for strange noises,
check for chip buildup, etc.
I expect most machines used by members of this group are not fully
automated, insofar as they do not have automatic lubrication nor any chip
removal system. The advantage the CNC gives you is that you can provide your
full attention to these things, rather than having to do it while turning a
handwheel at just the right rate.
