A paranoid engineer will always check the things that "shouldn't"
happen. The motor leads shorting out, or the motor shorting out is
one of those things. Bad connections are yet another potential
problem that needs to be checked. What most people will do in
troubleshooting is to check the "obvious" stuff first, then go to the
"unobvious" stuff...

Connectors can short due to wire flexing that can break a strand off a
stranded wire, continuing flexing can allow that wire to touch another
wire....

It's as useful, at times, to know what the problem *isn't* as well as
what it might be.
