I sympathize with you! I too blew out a motherboard as I was
interchanging my controller and printer without turning off the power!
The reasonable solution as someone else has suggested, is to plug in
a separate parallel port card (for low $$) and let it blow.
Are you running plasma? That's particularly nasty!
