On a modern motherboard all the peripherals like USB and keyboard
live on the same chip known as the North Bridge (could be south doubt
it though), chances are if something nasty is comming back up the par
port it would cause this sort of error. Run a meter across the lead
(google up the wiring for a par port) and see if anything untowards
is there - its possible that you're feeding 12v at a high current up
and frying your system
