I've done work which looks similar, though not using a lathe. I use Rhino
for modeling, StlWorks to generate tool paths for a 4 axis mill. Usually
with a rotary axis substituting for one linear axis so as to avoid having
to do major manual gcode edits. Most of the complexity is in Rhino,
modeling mainly in the round then 'unrolling' to a planar .stl object for
StlWorks. An example is at <
