First off don’t change the spindle motor, just power it with a Inverter
drive like a Teco FM series with a single phase input. You get phase
conversion and the ability to remotely control speed and direction in
one little box for not a lot more than a new motor. These are discounted
through several mail/web order places, like:

http://www.dealerselectric.com/index.htm

You need to id the motors and then buy drives for them like Gekos that
the folks here think highly of. The eight wires means they have 2
windings a phase and can be connected series or parallel bipolar and
unipolar a universal setup. Gekos have a good bang/buck ratio, building
drives from scratch is a huge task (trust me:)). Connect these through
the parallel port of a PC. You will likely have to make a cable but
there are breakout/isolation boards ready made that make it easier. For
a control program you can use open source software like EMC (Enhanced
Machine Controller). This is available in a ISO image ready to burn to
CD and install see linuxcnc.org.

The PC doesn’t have to be anything late model, but don’t go back past
Intel PII/Celeron or AMD K6(K6,K6-2,K6-2+,K6-3,K6-3+), 266Mhz and up for
aggravation insurance. These are about three generations back now and go
for cheap since they wont run WINXP/WIN2000 worth a darn. Yes I know
there are folks that are still using 486's and DOS but IMHO 486's and
P1's make good cases for drive controllers.

Luck
