You use a text editor to modify /etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4 on
some systems).
The ranges for the V and H frequencies is about halfway down the file.
Be careful doing
this, you can get screens that won't sync to your monitor. To step
through the various
resolutions, you use Ctrl_Alt_+ (using the keypad + key).

You shouldn't have to. There should be a setting to try the CD first,
then the hard drive. If no
CD is found, it boots from the hard drive.
