For one approach, go look at Allegro Micro, which has a driver
chip/controller chip combo. L298 chips can be bought at electronics
goldmine for about 2 dollars each (with heatsink). I know that Mouser
electronics has the L297 controller chip. Basic, but workable.

Go looking through the app notes for both chips and prospect the
allegro micro site thoroughly (for stepper notes, app notes, and data
sheets) You will learn a good bit.

If you will roll your own PC boards, do pay attention to ground
currents and such... See their layouts for a few tips...
