Here are two links to some interesting designs

http://www.i-way.co.uk/~storrs/lme/LMEHexapodMachine.html This is very interesting link, as it has free simulator and a lot of info.
This is basically the plans for a "flat pack" hexapod machine. Something that came out of this study is that backlash is extremely important to eliminate, and secondly it is critical to be able to measure the length that the arms are extended very accurately.
