Was it BDI 2.20b? I'm using 2.18, but I'm about to install 2.20b so I'll check
it out for you.
Does the machine have an ethernet port? if so, did you choose to configure it
on boot-up? If so, did you choose DHCP? If all these are true, and you don't
have it plugged into a network with a DHCP server, you'll get an error
something like what you describe. The solution is to either not enable the
eth0 interface at boot-up, or to manually configure it by assigning eth0 a
static IP & hostname.
password.
If you don't have a root password, and you want to login as root, just leave
the password prompt blank and hit Enter.

I've never tried to reinstall Windows after installing Linux ... *rimshot*.
Seriously though, to delete the Linux partitions, you'll probably need to use
the linux version of fdisk. You would need to login as root (or start up in
single user mode by typing `single` at the LILO: prompt), then you can run
`/sbin/fdisk` and follow the directions. It's a lot like DOS FDISK. Be sure
to _W_rite the partition table after you make your changes and before you
quit FDISK, or they'll not take effect.
