My problem with those machines was that they could lose location if you turned them
off, and they did not have homing. They used a mechanical cylinder counter, like the
odometer on a car. It had to be recorded from one day to the next to be sure that
you started at the same location the next day.

The steppers were very beefy, but could lose steps with heavy cutting in steel, or a
minor bump in Z. In operation it was a good practise to note the digital counter
values before hitting the GO button on each part.

One of the more more established commercial suppliers of stepper systems,
recommends that you home after each run to verify that you have returned
to the location you think, without losing steps. That way you have the ability
to certify that the parts are run consistently.
