I have replaced nuts in a similar manner using babbit. The basic
drill was to cross drill the nut and pocket it out so that a small
amount of thread left where the acme thread enters and exits the
nut. That leaves a pocket of air around the acme screw at the center
of the nut. I then soot up the acme screw and pour babbitt into the
pocket to cast a full threaded section around the screw. To tighten
it up later you can either remelt the babbitt in place or press the
babbit in the pocket to flow it around the screw again.
