For more info, look at this file : /var/log/XFree86.0.log
(You will have to be root to see it.)
Near the beginning, you should see something like :
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Thu Aug 21 22:58:04 2003
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"

60 Hz"
(**) | |-->Device "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)"
(**) |-->Input Device "Mouse1"
(**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard1"
This tells you which config file was used to start the X-windows server,
what
video card driver was selected, and some other info. Farther down, you can
see how it decided what video modes were compatible with your screen and
card. (You can switch between these available modes with the ctrl/Alt/Plus
key - that is the right hand + on the keypad area.) Ctrl/Alt/Backspace will
kill the X-windows server if you get stuck in a mode that that won't
display
on your monitor.
In very general terms, any X-windows server that works on one Linux build
should work on any other linux that is derived from the same kernel version.
I usually end up editing the XF86Config file to set up the video modes
the way
I like, get the mouse working as I want it, etc. But, that is not for
the timid.
