So why not just run it under plain old dos 5 or 6 without windows?

It may run under the windows DOS command, but it won't do so with the
real-time-determinism of versions running on either Linux or NT with
an appropriately patched kernel.

You might be able to get comparable behaviour with windows' 'reboot to
DOS' mode and a TSR realtime scheduler.
