Please tell me more about the solid collet setup. How does this
guarantee the Z axis position of the tool ? Maybe I just figured it
out: your collets don't have slots and thus don't change diameter and
thus their Z axis position is always fixed ?

We do this on our lathe using TurboCNC. We've got a bunch of tooling
mounted in quick change tool holders and a tool library set up. WE've
got a master tool (Tool 0) that we touch off from time to time. Once it
is set up, all the other tools are then calibrated. It works very, very
well.

With TCNC you can also run multiple tool libraries, ie one for gang
mounted tooling and another for the quick change tooling.
