You can use it however you like. I have used it to digitize, I HAVE
produce a topological map, the reason it needs to work with a
sideways force is that this is what you get on steep sided objects
when digitizing.
With an accurate probe with a decent cylindrical or spherical tip it
can be used for edge detection. And turbocnc includes a G code for
centre finding, pop the probe in a hole and it bounces around and
then tells you where the middle is.
