Hi Bill,
The turret is under computer control using Mach2. I have written a macro to
send the correct signals to index the tool. You only need one output
controlling a DPDT relay. When the relay is off the motor runs slowly
backwards untill it stalls against the ratchet. The current in reverse is
limited through a resistor so the motor is not harmed. When the relay is on
the motor runs forwards at full speed and rotates the turret. All the
computer has to know is how long it takes to turn the turret to the next
tool.
Why use a stepper? The only advantage would be that you could index the
turret both ways. However you would either need a huge stepper or some form
of locking mechanism to hold the tool in place while cutting. This adds a
lot to the cost and complexity.
